Internet Forums
Product Promotion

Internet forums are a wonderful place to get educated about all things internet, to promote your new business, and even to partner with others for more success. The word "forum" originally meant "the marketplace or public square of an ancient Roman city, the center of judicial and business affairs, and a place of assembly for the people." An internet forum, then, is a kind of public arena on the net for visitors to ask questions, share thoughts, give advice, and even promote their businesses. You will find forums particularly helpful to new internet marketers in the following ways.

In a forum:

•You can get an education. Ask questions in the forum you join about any topic, offer, product, ebook, affiliate program, or business opportunity you are considering. You will have plenty of advice coming back at you! Check out the websites of those who reply, and study their bias and experience as you evaluate the advice given.

•You will discover new products, problem-solvers, and trends. Chances are, many forum visitors have had the same challenge that has you stumped right now and can direct you to a good solution. Chances are, the buzz about a new product or trend will cause you to think about how you could profit from the newest thing.

•You can make contact with others, and possibly cross-promote your product or website to reach more people. If, in time, you collect email addresses, and have a list of folks who like your products, you could promote another website owner's complimentary products to your list for a percentage of the sales made. Another website owner could do the same for you. This is actually how the big guys get so rich! They all cross-promote each other's products for small residual.

•You can promote your product or website. This must be done carefully, however, as in many forums, blatant ads are taken down. What you can do is provide useful information in answer to a question, and then direct the reader to a how-to, or more complete information on your website by including your signature and a link following your post.

The most important point to remember is that forums are meant, firstly, to be helpful. As a newcomer, use them primarily to get your questions answered, or to get you over or around a problem you are having. Later, you'll want to use forums as advertising, but the advertising must be subtle, and it must come after giving valid, problem-solving direction and advice. There are always those who abuse the advantage of the forum as a marketplace. Many forums, therefore, will have rules you must agree to before joining. You want to be as polite as if the conversation were in your living room;you must give your real email address, and usually blatant ads are not permitted.

Internet marketing is a big forum topic today, but don't overlook the forums on other interests and hobbies. There are forums for sports enthusiasts, new parents, political animals, homeschooling, and crafts, to name just a few. You may have to google a bit to find a forum you feel comfortable visiting regularly, but do try this means of communication for fun and to further your internet education.
