What happens when a pc/laptop is connected to more than one internet connection?

My laptop can connect to cable broadband internet + another WIFI connection at the same time, when this happens, does the system use both the connections so that the internet speed is a cumulative of both or it chooses the faster network? And is there a way to control this utilization? I am trying to understand these so that I can optimize my network utilization.

All your computers share the maximum bandwidth from your broadband provider. Some routers allow you to choose which computer takes priority for bandwidth. so check your router documentation for bandwidth optimization.
